An open letter to a lot of you bashing North Carolina this morning:

Yes, what happened yesterday in North Carolina was a disgrace.

Yes, it’s terrifying that in 2012 people are still willing to openly oppose equal rights.

But to use this unfortunate development as a way to further justify your own prejudice of the South is equally disgraceful. It is the height of irony that you would use this as a way to expose your own emphasis on stereotypes and hatred.

There are 30 states that have some sort of constitutional or legislative ban of gay marriage in place. They are scattered across all regions of the United States. This isn’t a problem that can be rectified by calling people stupid because of where they live.

Bigotry doesn’t know geographic boundaries.

Those of you bashing the South for their ignorance need only look in the mirror to see a portrait of your own.
