Wow.
So Virginia’s Senate Republicans just pushed through a new redistricting plan today while a Democratic Senator (active in the civil rights movement) was still out of the capital due to the inauguration.
This left the otherwise balanced chamber with 20R-19D, key because the Republican Lieutenant Governor who would otherwise decide tiebreakers is mulling a run as an independent for Governor this year, and is thus unreliable.
The bill, which is not yet available online due to the abruptness of it all, is purported to gerrymander out at least one Democratic Senator. Ironically, the Senator in question (Creigh Deeds) has been one of the most vocal proponents of a bipartisan/nonpartisan redistricting method over the past decade.
This would come into effect for the 2015 elections, the approximate midway point between traditional redistricting intervals, and when many weakly gerrymandered districts start to lose their potency against natural demographic changes.
Gotta love the Commonwealth.
Edit: While I have mixed feelings on Ben Tribbett, he’s likely going to be one of the first places to get news on what the new map looks like.

Hi Joe, I wanted to drop you a note and say that you are correct that I missed key details from the article because I was in a hurry and only skimmed the article. The report here is of the results of Obama 2009 changes to the work requirement to food stamps, not the July changes to welfare reform. I made the necessary changes to the post. It's been a long week, but there's no excuse for sloppy writing. Thanks for keeping me honest.
And thank you for this refreshingly classy note. My own reblog was needlessly antagonistic in places, which has no place in the type of dialog I’d like to see here. I still disagree with a great many of your conclusions in the article, but that is nothing new.
Also, thank you for noting the update in the post, rather than making edits and doing nothing to note the original version that was published.Together, let’s build a community where the clash of ideals is fierce, but where these differences need not define and forever divide us.

CERN scientists discover new particle consistent with the Higgs boson
Scientists at the CERN research centre have found a new subatomic particle that could be the Higgs boson, the basic building block of the universe.
“I can confirm that a particle has been discovered that is consistent with the Higgs boson theory,” said John Womersley, chief executive of Britain’s Science & Technology Facilities Council, at an event in London.
The Higgs particle, although crucial for understanding how the universe was formed, remains theoretical. It explains how particles clumped together to form stars, planets and even life.

New Obama slogan has long ties to Marxism, socialism - Washington Times The Obama campaign apparently didn’t look backwards into history when selecting its new campaign slogan, “Forward” — a word with a long and rich association with European Marxism.
Many Communist and radical publications and entities throughout the 19th and 20th centuries had the name “Forward!” or its foreign cognates. Wikipedia has an entire section called “Forward (generic name of socialist publications).”
“The name Forward carries a special meaning in socialist political terminology. It has been frequently used as a name for socialist, communist and other left-wing newspapers and publications,” the online encyclopedia explains.
The slogan “Forward!” reflected the conviction of European Marxists and radicals that their movements reflected the march of history, which would move forward past capitalism and into socialism and communism.
Oh Washington Times.
In other news, in Virginia the annual Republican gathering is called the Republican Advance, because Republicans don’t Retreat. The more you know.

Hope 2.0 It was tough going. In 2008, campaign organizers could muster 1,000-person crowds with a single e-mail blast. This time, only a handful of potential volunteers would show up – and those who did wanted to vent as much as they wanted to help. “The first meetings they had, these young organizers out there are really hearing it,” says Figueroa. “They actually had to organize to get people to show up. A good, solid 10 to 15 minutes of material about ‘what the hell we expected’ and ‘what didn’t happen’ and ‘why we’re so disappointed.’” The challenge for the organizers was to listen – and then to turn the passion around, telling the disgruntled supporters that they had a choice to make: Give up and let the Republicans take back the White House, or get to work again and fight for four more years.
